Daddy's Got a Brand New Grill

Almost nine years ago, my wife and I bought our home. One thing that cemented this big-life-moment was getting a grill. This was probably one of the first "new home expenses" that was really significant. I drove down to my local Home Depot, picked out a modest propane grill and propane tank, loaded the good ol' Suburban and took it home. It was probably the mid-grade out of that year's line-up (circa 2014). Three burner, no sear-station/fancy-gadgets, with a side burner. Side burner was a must for cooking fish, which is not allowed inside the home.

The grill has probably been photographed hundreds of times and can be seen through our social media posts and blogs. (You are following us right? Rubbs by Chubbs (FB / IG) - Get on it!) If memory serves right, I probably dropped $160-$180 on the grill and tank itself. And man, did I run the snot out of that thing! Hundreds of wieners in that thing (there's a yo-mama joke there, just not gonna pursue it). Thousands of miles of meat and countless hours working it. Years went by and the miles (and Arizona sun) had taken it's toll on the ol' girl (not typo). Last year she was retired probably around September or so. Rest-In-Peace.

Months went by with no grill-grill at our place, the Traeger was doing just fine for us. But I knew I needed a new grill-grill and thus began my hunt. Lot of research and effort went into it. Lots of questions to ask myself:

Built-In or Portable?

Charcoal or Propane?

Side-Burner or No?

Sear-Station or No?

Other Fancy Things or No?

How much to drop on the new one?

And looking at that last question, hot-damn inflation! What's your problem?!!? Seemed like you couldn't get into anything for under $250! Close to x1.5 more than I spent on my last one and everything seemed like half the quality! Yea, I'm boomer-ing right now! Just like the old-timers that would come up at a previous employer of mine talking about buying milk, eggs and 22LR ammo for $20.

With cost being a main concern of mine, it helped me narrow done some of the list above: Portable - Propane - No Side Burner and didn't need any real other fancy things. By the time I came to all these decisions, still had a hard time justifying the costs of everything.

Also please note, side areas for prep/plates are not a fancy-thing. Those should be standard with every grill or include a fold-out table. Just sayin'.

But then the grilling-gods decided to smile upon me! One of the grills I was looking at (Dyna-Glo 3-Burner) went on mega-sale! $99.00! That was like $150.00 off of MSRP! So you bet your ass I snagged one up! It had a lot of what I was looking for and then some. Nice big wheels and feet for stability when moving around the backyard. 3-burners, which includes a sear-station. Two side areas. Temperature gauge on grill hood. It also has a small insert that you can fill with wood-chips to add a smoke flavor to your cooking (have not tried yet).

Some things to note are that the burners are much closer to the grill plates than my old one, so you gotta watch that. I like a little further down burner as they tend to be more forgiving. You also really need to watch the sear-station on high as it means business!

Right now both the grill and I are learning each other, but honestly I'm pretty dang satisfied so far. I think my biggest take-away for ya'll would be to make sure to go through the list of Q's above when it comes to making a big decision like this.
